KEMAMAN, April 28 — A wait spanning more than three decades has finally come to an end as the Terengganu State Government takes proactive steps to restore the Sungai Kijal estuary, which has long faced sedimentation issues and has been a major concern for local fishermen.

The Chairman of the State Tourism, Culture, Environment and Climate Change Committee, Razali Idris, said the initiative is now possible after the area was returned to the state government from its previous lease to Kijal Resort Sdn Bhd.

According to him, the increasingly shallow estuary has, for years, made it difficult for fishing boats to enter and exit the sea, affecting the fishermen’s livelihoods.

“This issue has persisted for nearly 30 years. Sand accumulation has not only disrupted the river flow but also affected navigation routes and the safety of fishermen.

“While the area was under lease, the state government had no authority to carry out comprehensive restoration works,” he said when met here.

He added that various restoration measures will be implemented, including dredging works, regular maintenance, and long-term solutions to ensure the estuary remains functional.

Among the key plans is the construction of protective structures such as breakwaters, with an estimated cost ranging from RM100 million to RM150 million, which are expected to control coastal erosion and reduce sediment buildup at the estuary.

At the same time, immediate actions will include periodic maintenance works costing between RM30,000 and RM50,000 annually to ensure the waterway remains open and safe for use.

Razali, who is also the Kijal State Assemblyman, said the state government is committed to ensuring that future development in the area is carried out in a more structured and inclusive manner without neglecting the interests of local residents.

“This is not just a restoration project, but an effort to revive the economic lifeline of fishermen in Kijal. We want the Sungai Kijal estuary to once again become a catalyst for the coastal community’s livelihood,” he said.

He also expressed hope that the initiative would bring new life to the local fishing community and help revitalise economic activities in the area after years of challenges.
